Just in case anyone is interested as to why they highlighted the character 'Kwak Nak Won' (곽낙원 1859 - 1939) is that she is the mother to Kim Gu (김구) who is one of the most important and influential member of the Korean Independence Movement during the Japanese Colonial Era (1910 - 1945). The latter part of the drama really dives deep into the circumstances why Joseon decided to become a hermit state, unlike Japan which opened its doors. (Which led to its downfall as Choi predicted. Japan become industrialized and adopted the colonization mentality that Europe was having. Also, as their second official invasion, they knew they had to be incredibly well readied, and so with tech and new ideology while Joseon hung back brought the downfall of the Joseon Era) Tbh, I think that its dramatized too much in that it makes the court's decision look really bad, but given Joseons circumstances, where anyone that landed on its shores came guns blazing and swords waving first, it is understandable. The last episode tries to show the influence of democracy and national identity becoming ingrained in people like her so she later teaches her son to be the man he is.

I still find it so weird that the main character on the handmaidens tale is played by an actress in a cult. But Scientology does make you brainwash yourself. I guess that makes it even harder to break free.
