My own interpretation of this movie is that it’s a dream. 3/4 of the movie is Naomi Watts and how she dreams about the perfect life and how she achieves her dreams of becoming a successful actress who gets attention from acting directors and other actors. Basically the perfect dream. She also has complete control on the people and the relationships and of course, the plot lines in her dreams. She dreams a world where Rita, (Laura Harring) actually isn’t killed in the car crash, and she loses her memory. In certain parts of the film, I feel like Betty or Naomi Watts includes details of reality, such as, “We can pretend to be someone else. Just like in the movies.” She wants to become an outgoing actress. She wants to be someone who she isn’t. The dream though ends at Club Silencio where it finally bridges into reality. “it’s all an illusion.” The magician said. I believe he was referring back to the dream. The dream isn’t reality. At the end, Naomi Watts goes through a horrific mental breakdown with two old people who are scary as shit and screaming in her face. I believe they were her grandparents from her old town, who didn’t think she would make it in life. The people who discouraged her, haunt her and crush her dreams, just like Hollywood. (David Lynch is very upfront on how Hollywood can ruin dreams). I think these inner devils also represent guilt and stress after paying a hit man to kill Rita. She loved her, but her love soon turned into something dangerous. So dangerous you won’t remember a thing. Just like Rita in, “Mulholland Drive”. This film is beautifully well done and is just absolutely frightening. I am obsessed with this movie. I do believe that it is one of the best films of the 21st century. If anybody feels hesitant about the film, please watch it. There isn’t one straight explanation, it’s how you interpret it. Although, David Lynch did leave clues for his fans to look in Mulholland Drive. So keep out for them. Really pay attention to the color red, and different personalities and how the characters change behavioral wise. It’s very “key” to understanding the movie. You can’t watch this movie once. You have to watch this movie a couple times with some research to understand the meaning of this film. This is my all time favorite movie. Well done David Lynch. The acting in here is also amazing! Naomi Watts hits out of the park in this psychological neo-noir drama, horror, thriller, suspense/mystery film. David Lynch, you are a genius.
