I just barely started watching Community on Netflix and saw this episode last night. Easily one of the funniest and most creative episodes I’ve seen

Now, there are ways I've seen the ship done that actually avoid most, if not all the unpleasantries that can come with it. While the start is a bit messy, I can actually somewhat get behind the My Tallest comic from DeviantArt. For one thing, Dib is clearly an adult and hasn't seen Zim in years (he was hauled off to Foodcourtia again with much stricter provisions, but Dib only JUST figured out how to rescue him). In other words, the two aren't currently abusing or stalking each other in anyway. The comic does imply a lot of child Dib's obsession with Zim was because he had a crush on him which... isn't great. However, it's also made clear Dib only realized it once he was older and Zim was long gone. His past actions are noted to be inappropriate and the result of being a kid who didn't know how to comprehend those feelings yet. He's very much matured since then and mellowed out a lot. In other words, while it does kind of gloss over some of the past abuse, the comic most certainly DOES NOT condone it and keeps it out of the relationship entirely in a way that still kind of makes sense with the characters. On Zim's part, his lack of awareness of romance/sex is thoroughly acknowledged and respected. He mostly agrees to the relationship because adult!Dib's physique is that of the irken ideal; he doesn't love Dib so much as he worships him like one of the tallest. As soon as Dib realizes that Zim has no idea what romance is, he immediately calls off the relationship. Dib is saddened to do it, but he ultimately knows it'd be manipulation if he continued to try to be with Zim. Again, not much of a shipper, especially for ZADR, and the comic's story does have issues with pacing and quality, but I give the writer massive props for finding a way to avoid the unfortunate implications while still being somewhat believable to Zim and Dib's actual characters.
